DESCRIPTION (Telephone 01805 804360. To visit the owners website click HERE).

I know from reading our local press that the owner of this fishery has changed the venue from Trout to coarse fishing. I have yet to fish there myself since it changed, but I have received an e-mail from Robert, who lives in Ipswich and visited the venue while on holiday down here.

The text that follows is a complete and unabridged copy of his e-mail ... looks well worth a visit.

"We decided to look at a lake near Winkleigh in North Devon - Stafford Moor Fisheries. It is a bit of a trek but thought you might be interested that I am no mean fisherman - pleasure in the sun type thing - but at Stafford Moor I was like Bob Nudd on E's. First visit was blowing a howling gale and I sat in the bay on Woodpecker lake and in 6 1/2 hours had just under 90lb mainly Carp with Rudd (30 to the pound jobs) Tench, Roach and a bloody great eel. Second visit the weather was a bit colder but still managed 60lb with 3 Carp to 6.

Fishery used to be fly fishing only, the new owners have kept 2 lakes for trout but have built 3 more - 1 a beastie carp, 1 a match and the other – Woodpecker. I think that coarse fishing has only been available for 3 weeks or so. The place is very muddy at the moment but you can park pretty close to the lakes. Keep nets are OK at the moment but you need 2 - 1 for carp and 1 for other fish. New owners are very friendly and enthusiastic and will advise on hot spots when you call "

GETTING THERE

Although I have yet to visit the venue, I do know where it is !!

It is easy to find if you follow the A377 out of Exeter and pass through Crediton and Copplestone. About 2 miles after Copplestone at Morchard Road bear left onto the B3320 signposted to Winkleigh and Torrington. Drive straight through Winkleigh and about 4 miles later, on the left, is one of those naff brown tourist signs pointing left to the Stafford Moor fishery.

If you reach Dolton Beacon, where there is a large garage on the right, opposite a turning on the left to Dolton, you've missed the tourist sign by about 1/2 mile ... so turn the car round and try again ! The journey takes about 45 to 50 minutes from Exeter and the B3320 is an extremely pleasant, quiet, drive.

FACILITIES, etc.

Unknown at this time – I’ll update when I have been there.
